Word of the Week: ‘Accountability’

by | Nov 6, 2025

ac·count·a·bil·i·ty  /əˌkoun(t)əˈbilədē/
noun
  1. the fact or condition of being accountable; responsibility.
“their lack of accountability has corroded public respect”
    Similar: responsibility, liability, answerability
What does it mean to be an accountable person?

An accountable person takes ownership of their actions and their outcomes, being prepared to explain and justify their decisions to others. They are reliable, trustworthy, and answer for both successes and failures, rather than making excuses or blaming others. This quality is essential for building trust and is valued in professional and personal relationships.

Key traits of an accountable person
    • Takes ownership:

They accept responsibility for their choices and actions, regardless of the result.

    • Answers for their actions:

They are willing to provide a satisfactory reason for why things happened the way they did.

    • Is reliable:

They are trusted to follow through on commitments and deliver results.

    • Doesn’t make excuses:

They stop blaming others or making excuses when things go wrong and instead focus on the outcome of their choices.

    • Is trustworthy:
Their willingness to be accountable builds trust with colleagues, employers, and others in their life.

Watch the interview between myself and Chris Piekarski of the Echo Essentials podcast recorded Nov. 5 and posted today. We talk about the meeting, the decision and the potential impact on the next municipal election, which takes place Oct. 26, 2026. I talk about the likelihood of me running for a North Bay council seat next year and some of the issues and subjects that may be part of my focus.

Dave Dale

Writer, photographer and proud father. My mom's family is from the Soo with its Algoma Highlands, dad hailed from Cobden in the Ottawa Valley and I spent my teen years in Capreol. Summers were at the beach on the Vermillion River and winters at 'The Rink.' Born in East York but Toronto never was my thing. Ever since a kid looking out the window on long trips, I imagined living on the highway in a little house with a big yard and trees growing all around me.
